One challenge many creatives face in their arts is the fear of imperfection – Atelophobia.
They’d work on a piece and the finer it seems to you, the uglier it is to them. Some end up not submitting work on time, while others do submit, but live with the feeling of guilt, believing they could have done better.
Kanye West has a keen eye for detail, and it seems to haunt him often. After a long wait, fans almost fought the Donda album from his hands. He kept pushing dates, finetuning details.
A month after his Donda album release last year, Kanye wa still convinced it could be better. Not even the gold certifications and topping charts could make him think otherwise. He went on to release an updated version of the album, altering some tracks.
His ‘curse’ is a blessing to lovers of his music. Kanye may see his works as one long trail of imperfection as he keeps fine-tuning but all fans see is legendary masterpieces they don’t wat to end anytime soon.
It is not limited to Kanye. It happens to many others too. It is okay to feel your best is not good enough. In fact, in most instances when you believe your best is not good enough, it actually isn’t. This however should be more motivation to work and not reason to sulk or look down on yourself.
It will never be perfect. Make the effort to get better but don’t minimize that which you are able to achieve.
Post script: Kanye’s ‘Runaway’ is 11 years old. Relive the magic.
